I ask this because it is has a very real chance of ruining our promotion chances this season - and could lead to the financial backers at the club to pull out.
As I said before, when I was there only 2 weeks ago, the curva sud was packed and rocking - impressive for a third division game - with all the choreographed singing and drum beating that you see at the bigger Serie A clubs.
However, as I said in last Monday's post, last Sunday's game saw the curva sud nearly empty as the various factions of Ultras sat at different parts of the stadium. It is apparently the usual Italian fan nonsense about some of the fans being right wing, and others left wing, and now they won't sit in the curva together. The effect appears to be that the support for the team is not nearly as strong as it was, and it did seem to affect the players as we only managed to scrape past Grosseto 1-0.
More importantly though, the Chairman and President have both come out to question whether all the money that they have invested is actually worth it if even the harcore supporters won't get together to support the team - by the sounds of things, they may be looking for a way to jump ship. And all of this is threatening to destabilise the team just before we play our most important three games of the season, away to leaders Sassuolo, home to fourth placed Lucchese and away to fifth placed Pisa.
There are undoubtedly other factors to Marinese's and Poletti's concerns (political and financial support from the city being noticeable by its absence), but it does seem to me that the present situation has largely happened due to the whims of the Ultras at the club, and the effect it is having is potentially crippling to our push for promotion - and if Marinese and Poletti pull out of the club, we could sink without a trace.

The attitude of fans in Italy does fascinate and amaze me at times.
At Celtic our spectrum of fans goes from the hard-core Irish Republicans to the Japanese who are turning up to watch Nakamura yet we have no problem all sitting together.
I guess the question is whether your politics are more important than your football team. Not to me.
interesting, can you tell us more about the political splits? the realignment / shifting of groups seems to be a fairly continuous process in most Curve, and at Roma we have some fairly wierd political divides which, however, are currently managing to coexist more or less peacefully. (currently less, as it turned out on tuesday).
is there a strong political tradition one way or the other in your Sud? ours has been drifting to the right for the past 15 years.
Here's what it said about it in Il Gazzettino (I figured it was better than trying to explain it myself):
"Siamo sicuri che valga davvero la pena di fare tanti sacrifici per investire nel calcio a Venezia? Io ne sono sempre meno convinto e sono pronto a fare un passo indietro".
A prendere questa perentoria posizione è l'amministratore delegato del Venezia, Vincenzo Marinese, all'indomani della disgregazione della tifoseria organizzata lagunare con permanenza in curva sud dei Vecchi Ultrà ed emigrazione nei distinti dei Rude Fans.
"Domenica contro il Grosseto il non-spettacolo cui è stato dato vita sugli spalti non mi ha lasciato per nulla indifferente - illustra il suo pensiero il dirigente lagunare -. Vedere dei gruppi in settori differenti ha segnato il momento più basso del post fallimento. La squadra va a gonfie vele, ha vinto un campionato di C2 ed è terza in C1, ma anziché far quadrato attorno ai colori arancioneroverdi assistiamo a scene indecorose. A me non interessano i motivi bensì i dati di fatto, e se nemmeno la tifoseria è compatta attorno a giocatori e società allora significa che questi dirigenti hanno sperperato 7.5 milioni di euro in due stagioni per niente".
Il Calcio Venezia si sta dunque interrogando se la città possa, e voglia sul serio, permettersi una squadra di calcio.
"Proprio così, e la cosa che mi fa più male - prosegue Marinese - è rendermi conto che da domenica scorsa siamo più soli di prima. Dal primo giorno diciamo che per pensare in grande servono forze imprenditoriali, politiche, che continuano a latitare, e una tifoseria unita. Fino a ieri credevo che almeno quest'ultima componente fosse un nostro punto di forza, oggi non ne sono più persuaso e il Venezia si ritrova più solo e debole di prima".
Al tempo stesso va però rilevato che i problemi interni ai gruppi organizzati non coinvolgono il resto degli oltre 4.500 spettatori che mediamente siedono al Penzo.
"Quando si è trattato di elogiare i tifosi che ci stanno vicini in casa e trasferta lo abbiamo sempre fatto e non ho rimpianti, però attualmente le loro magagne rischiano di intaccare la passione delle altre persone. Il pubblico deve essere coeso per rappresentare nella loro interezza le città di Venezia e Mestre. Non fisso ultimatum né intendo fare da mediatore, ma a coloro che non vanno d'accordo dico soltanto di mettere da parte i problemi facendo tutti quanti un passo indietro. Il 17 dicembre contro la Lucchese mi auguro che la situazione torni il più normale possibile".
Al centro del putiferio ci sono le differenti concezioni, da parte di Vecchi Ultrà e Rude Fans, dell'essere ultras. Che i due gruppi siano politicamente schierati agli antipodi (di destra i primi, di sinistra i secondi) non sarebbe - a detta dei Vecchi Ultrà (i Rude Fans invece non hanno voluto rilasciare dichiarazioni) - il motivo scatenante.
"La politica non ha avuto alcun peso nella nostra decisione di "pulire" la curva - ha spiegato "Kaos", leader dei Vecchi Ultrà, nati nel '98 -, semplicemente non ne potevamo più delle continue provocazioni da parte dei Rude Fans. Loro ci hanno sempre imputato di sventolare la bandiera italiana, considerato in maniera assurda un simbolo di destra, ma la verità è che così a suo tempo avevamo voluto prendere le distanze dalle loro bandiere rasta. Stasera stessa noi avremo una riunione con Nuova Guardia e Brigata 2006 (composti da ex Ultras Unione, ndr) perché vogliamo che in curva si tifi per il VeneziaMestre e nient'altro. L'antirazzismo, causa nobilissima che anche noi abbracciamo nella vita di tutti i giorni, allo stadio non ha alcun significato. Che curva ci sarà contro la Lucchese? Proponiamo uno striscione unico dietro alla porta con la scritta "VeneziaMestre", tutti gli altri che vorranno sostenere la squadra esporranno il loro stendardo dietro a quello principale nel quale tutti potremo rispecchiarci. Perché quel che conta sono solo i colori arancioneroverdi".
Until last year, I think there was one main Ultras group (Ultras Unione) but that disbanded and has now seemingly lead to this split. I'm not sure what way the curva has leant historically - the Veneto as a region is typically viewed as right wing, but I had got the impression before all this blew up that our fans were not so bad in that regard.
I think a lot of clubs are looking at the whole role of the Ultras and I know a lot of the trouble at Lazio is down to the loss of their traditional perks at the club.
Certainly the lagunari don't have as bad a reputation as some of their north-eastern cohorts but it would be a real shame if they dented hopes for a good season. Maybe a couple of bats round the head with a gondola paddle would do the trick?
